DIY Pennant Banner Template for Your Next Party!

DSC_0237I spent the afternoon making this Spiderman pennant banner for my little guy’s 4th birthday party this weekend.  It was super easy and so much fun.  So…I thought I would share the template I made with you, along with a few easy instructions so you could whip one up for that next party you’re hosting.  And the best part is, it is completely customizable.  Choose your own scrapbook papers and have it say anything you like!  🙂

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your choice of scrapbook paper, one sheet for every two pennants in your banner
  • White cardstock or printer paper
  • Baker’s twine
  • Glue Stick
  • Scotch Tape
  • Templates shown below

Start by printing this triangle template: Banner Triangle Template

Cut out two sides of the triangle, leaving the white space at the bottom of the triangle attached.  (This will give you a border that you can fold over the twine and “hang” each pennant for stability.)  Decide how many pennants you need to spell your desired word(s).  Then simply arrange the triangle on your patterned scrapbook paper so you can get two triangles from each sheet and cut them out.   (Hint:  when you make your 2nd cut, turn the triangle upside down.)   Once your triangles are cut out, go ahead and fold each one back on the straight side about 1/2″ from the edge, like this:DSC_0235You will then need to cut the little overhang off of each top corner so that your folded over piece is even with the front of the triangle.  Now, set the triangles aside.

Now to print your letters!  I have spelled out Happy Birthday for you and also included the entire alphabet so you can spell out a name if desired, or spell out a different word such as “Congratulations,” “Welcome Baby,” or “Be Thankful.”  Why not make one with your sweet kid’s name for their room too!  This is such a cute and inexpensive way to add a little whimsy to any space!

You can select and print your desired letters/numbers here:

Once all of your desired letters/numbers are printed, cut them out in circles.  Cut just inside the printed circles to avoid getting the circle border on your banner.DSC_0238When all of your letters are cut out, just use a glue stick to glue them to the pennant triangles you cut earlier.  Make sure to glue them right side up with the straight folded edge of the triangle at the top.

Now all that’s left is to secure the pennants to your twine!  Leave 10-12 inches of twine at the beginning and end of each word for hanging.  “Hang” the folded edge of each triangle over your twine and tape the folded edge to the back of the triangle to secure it on the twine.  I prefer using the folded edge method to hang the pennants on the twine rather than just taping the twine directly to the back of the triangles for two reasons.  First, it provides more durability and ensures that your pennants stay right where you put them and don’t fall off in the middle of your party if your tape fails.  Second, taping the pennant to itself allows you to slide and space the letters as you secure them to the twine.  Because they aren’t taped directly to the twine, they can move freely, which provides more maneuverability and allows a natural drape if you choose to hang your banner with some slack in the twine.  It may seem like more trouble to do it this way, but it’s worth it!  🙂

Once you have all of your letters secured on the twine, you’re done!  Just hang your banner and get ready to party!

  9. Thank you!!! You just made this whole project easier…I was looking for die cuts of my letters on etsy, etc. You even shared your letters, in circles no less (so much easier to cut out), for FREE. I can email you a picture if you like..let me know where to email to. Thanks again!!

  11. Hi – this tutorial is fantastic. Thank you so much. It shaved a ton of time off of my project for my son’s birthday party. I’m wondering, though, if you could give me the name of the font that you used. I’m going to add “1st” on one of the pennants, and I can’t seem to find a font that looks right.

    • Thank you so much, Angelique! So happy I could help! The font that I used for the letters on the template is called “Spicy Rice”. I love it because it is so cute, yet bold at the same time. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need anything else. And Happy Birthday to your sweet boy! 🙂

    • Hi! Were you ever able to make a “1st” circle for one of the pennants? I too was hoping to do the same but thought I’d check first to see if you were successful and if so, if you happened to still have the file you created? Thank you!

      • Hi, Meghan! I just updated the tutorial with 1st-8th circles. I hope that helps. Please let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  14. Thank you so much for this! It’s exactly what I needed for my daughter’s first birthday. I love it when I can find people who are more talented than I am who are willing to share their talents with the world 🙂

    • Awww! Thanks, Beth! I’m so happy that you were able to use the template to make your sweet girl’s 1st birthday a little more special. That means so much to me! Take care and thanks for your encouragement! 🙂

      • Same here!! We’re celebrating my baby girl’s 1st birthday on Saturday, and I want to make these super simple pennants. Thanks! For those who have girls, does this font look pretty for a girl party? I’m just now checking it out. Maybe I’m crazy, but the font looks more like for a boy. I may still use it anyway, can’t get any easier that using these templates! 🙂 Thanks Sweetbeanz!

    • You are very welcome, Cole! You’re right! This is an easy project that anyone can do, even if they don’t consider themselves very crafty. It’s a quick and inexpensive way to add a special message or just a pop of color to any gathering. Thanks for stopping by! So glad you liked it! 🙂

  15. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I was wondering about the exact shape and size of each triangle, whether I should use scrapbooking paper or card stock, if I should hole-punch to hang and how many inches is each circle. Thank you so much for sharing your method! I’m going to use your methods to create a orang, brown & red HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY CARTER “Daniel Tiger” themed bd party. Then put the CARTER banner in his room.

    • Hi, Lia! A Daniel Tiger party sounds adorable! Each triangle is about 7×7 inches and the circles are a little over 4 inches. You can always cut them larger/smaller if desired though! That is what is so great about this template…it is completely customizable! 🙂 I used scrapbook paper for my banner because there were so many more color options, but card stock would work as well. The “fold over” method for attaching the pennants as explained in the template is very secure, but you could certainly punch holes for hanging as well. You may want to reinforce the holes if you choose to hang it that way, though. I hope that helps. Take care & Happy Birthday to Carter!

  16. The “fold over” method works wonderfully! I was going to attach a picture of the finished product but I don’t see that option, so I’ll describe it: I printed black letters to 198 pt. on plain white paper, cut them with a 3 in scallop cutter and pasted it onto a (orange, brown or black) circle, then the pennant. For the HBD triangles, I used (brown and orange) construction paper; for the CARTER triangles, I used (red) card stock, glueing them down with “mono adhesive dots” (the kind in a roll that looks like white out). By the time I picked up the twine, the construction paper ones were already unglued, but the they still stayed on the twine from the folds, yay!

I also used the scallop and circles to make “thank you for celebrating with me” tags- for tiger chocolate-drizzled pretzel sticks. Thanks for making this project possible for me so many other moms. I’ll be stopping often now that I’ve discovered your blog!

    • Thanks so much for your feedback, Lia! And what a great idea to make “thank you” tags for favors also! I am so glad to hear your party was a success! And I am hoping to get back to blogging again very soon! 🙂

  17. Loved it – made it for a baby shower. I can’t wait for everyone to see how cute it turned out! You are the best.

  18. I used the template for the letters, but I found the triangle was a little bit too small to fold it over and put on the letters. I made it slightly bigger. I’m in the process of finishing my first banner. Thank you for posting for us non crafty people! 🙂

    • Glad it was helpful, Anne! When I cut out my triangles, I didn’t cut on the top line & left that little area between the top and the side of the paper to fold over. I probably should have made that a dotted line on the template so it was easier to understand. Thanks for your feedback! 🙂 I’m glad you were able to make it work and I’m sure your banner turned out awesome with larger triangles! 🙂
